Who invented The Teddy Bear?
As strangely as it sounds the Teddy Bear was invented by two different people in two different parts of the world, around the same time, but under different circumstances.
Morris and Rose Michtom of Brooklyn, New York, created the first Teddy bear in the U.S based off of a hunting trip Theodore Roosevelt took, in which the hunting was so poor, that one of the fellow hunters not wanting the President to be disappointed found a Bear and tied him to a tree for the President to shoot, the president refused because the animal was too helpless. The incident inspired Clifford Berryman, to create a cartoon of the incident that was published in The Washington Post
On November 16th 1902, The Michtoms named their bear "Teddy's Bear" and placed it in the window of their candy and stationery store, the toys were an immediate success and Michtom founded the Ideal Novelty and Toy Company.
In Germany Richard Steiff was working for his Aunt in her stuffed toy business, Richard spent his spare time drawing animals and in 1902 the same year the Michtoms made Teddy’s Bear, Steiff made a prototype of a toy bear based off of Richards designs.
